What to look for in a surface electrode

What an electrode is, and how many you need

An electrode is simply the part that touches your skin and lets the current pass through. For the current to do anything, it has to travel from one point to another — a start and a finish.

Some are uni-polar. Each one is only a start or a finish on its own, so you use 2 at a time and the current runs between them through your body.

Others are bi-polar. Both ends are built into the single piece, so the current makes its loop inside that one electrode — and you only need the one.

So the simple version: uni-polar means you'll want 2, and bi-polar means 1 is enough.

A single uni-polar piece can also pair with an insertable electrode, so the current runs between two areas at once — useful if you also use e-stim anal and prostate toys.

Match the format to how you'll use it

The right piece comes down to how hands-on you want to be.

Adhesive gel pads peel and press straight onto the skin and hold themselves in place, so you don't have to. Clip-on clamps grip softer skin folds where a flat pad won't sit. Body cups are held under a tight strap or garment.

Cups have one useful edge: because both poles sit close together in a single piece, the current stays local and never crosses the body, so they can go on the chest and upper body where flat pads shouldn't.

For a hands-on approach, gloves and finger sleeves turn touch itself into the current. Metal surface probes do the opposite — they concentrate it to a small point for fine accuracy.

A few pieces double as an impact tool and an electrode: a spanking warms and reddens the skin first, then the current lands on skin that's already sensitive. If that appeals, the paddles range pairs naturally with it.

Power, gel and placement
