Babydolls, Dresses & Chemises
What to know before buying
Which silhouette actually flatters
The babydoll is one of the most universally flattering cuts in lingerie. Because the skirt flares from the bust and skims the waist and hips entirely, it works on body types that fitted lingerie doesn't — nothing clings below the bust, so nothing is emphasised below it either. The focus stays on the neckline and the bust.
A chemise is the opposite. It follows the body from bust to thigh, which rewards confidence in your shape but can feel exposing if that's not where you're at. If you want the elegance of a longer, more fitted piece, a chemise delivers that. If you want something that flatters without requiring perfect confidence, the babydoll almost always works better.
The bust is the only measurement that matters
Unlike a bra set, cup size is irrelevant here. The fabric drapes and adjusts below the bust without needing a precise fit. The only thing that needs to work is how the bust section sits — too big and the straps won't hold position, too small and the cups will pull. Measure the underbust and check the brand's own size guide before ordering.
Fabric quality matters more here than elsewhere
A babydoll's appeal is in how the fabric moves — which means cheap fabric kills the effect entirely. Low-quality mesh bunches, low-quality lace goes stiff after washing, and synthetic satin clings in the wrong places. The brands stocked here are chosen specifically because their fabrics drape the way they're supposed to.
White and ivory — a note on colourways
White and ivory babydolls are the natural choice for bridal and honeymoon wear, but they only photograph well and read as intended against fair skin tones. Against deeper skin tones, white can wash out or disappear. Black, deep red, and jewel tones are more versatile across skin tones and tend to photograph better across the board. Worth factoring in before ordering.
Finishing the look
A babydoll without stockings almost always feels incomplete — the hem floats without anything anchoring it below. Stockings and hosiery solve that instantly and make the whole look feel considered. A sheer kimono or robe as a layering piece over the top gives the evening a starting point before the babydoll is the focus.
For the right atmosphere around it, candles and massage oils change how a room feels before anyone gets undressed. For matching briefs where the babydoll doesn't include them, female underwear covers that.
Babydolls vs other lingerie styles
A babydoll covers more than a bra set but reveals differently — through movement and drape rather than cut. The dynamic is different, not the level of exposure. Corsets and basques give waist definition and structure that a babydoll won't — the right choice when shape matters more than movement. Bodies and playsuits are more fitted and structured throughout, with none of the drape.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with a small amount of gentle detergent. Press excess water out gently — never wring — and dry flat away from direct heat. Lace and sheer mesh snag from rough surfaces, nails, and jewellery. Store separately from anything that can catch the fabric. Wetlook pieces can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and stored flat.
