Condoms

The right condom isn't just about protection — fit, material, and thickness all change how a condom feels to wear and affect whether you'll actually use one consistently. This range includes options from Durex, SKYN, and other trusted brands. Part of the 👉Lube & Essentials hub — avoid oil-based lube with latex condoms, but water-based and silicone-based are both fine. If flavoured condoms are on the list, flavoured lube pairs naturally for oral.

What to consider when buying condoms

Latex vs non-latex

Standard latex works reliably for the vast majority of people. Polyisoprene is a synthetic rubber that shares latex's strength and stretch without the proteins that cause allergic reactions. It's softer, has none of the rubber smell, and transmits body heat much faster — it warms up almost immediately. People who try it often switch for feel alone, not allergy. Non-latex tends to cost a little more per unit, but that reflects what the material delivers.

Oil-based products — body lotion, coconut oil, petroleum jelly — degrade latex and will weaken it. Water-based and silicone-based lubes are both fine with latex. That restriction doesn't apply to polyisoprene, which is oil-resistant.

Getting the right fit

Condom sizing is expressed as nominal width — the flat measurement across the condom when unrolled. That number, doubled, gives you the approximate internal circumference when worn. Snug is under 52mm; standard runs 52–54mm; large sits at 55–57mm; XL runs 58–60mm. Anything above 60mm is XXL territory; anything meaningfully below 49mm moves into specialist sizing. Most manufacturers don't explain this, which is why people buy the wrong size for years without questioning it.

The practical way to find your starting point: measure your erect girth in millimetres and divide by two. That's your nominal width.

Length is almost never the real issue — most condoms are long enough, and any excess simply rolls down at the base. Girth is what actually determines fit, comfort, and whether the condom stays in place. If standard has ever felt loose or tight enough to notice, the nominal width figure gives you somewhere concrete to start.

Thickness and lube

Thinner latex reduces the barrier enough that the difference is noticeable. Ultra-thin options are made from higher-grade latex processed to a thinner wall — the protection is the same, but the material is less forgiving during application. Thicker options are a straightforward choice for anyone who prefers the extra reassurance.

Extra-lubricated condoms carry a heavier silicone coating than standard, which matters more than thickness for anal sex — the body produces no natural lubrication there. A dedicated anal lube used alongside is thicker than a standard formula and stays in place better.

Textured condoms

Texture changes the physical experience beyond what thickness or material does on its own. Raised ribs around the circumference create movement-based pressure on each stroke. External studs increase the surface area pressing against the receiving partner. Grooves, waves, and contoured shapes each produce different effects — the variety is wider than most people realise, and the only way to know what works is to try a few types. Assorted packs exist for exactly that reason.

Flavoured condoms are widely assumed to be oral-only. Most are fully rated for vaginal and anal sex too — check the individual product, but don't assume they're limited to oral.

Why the right condom makes a difference

Most people settle on one type early and never revisit the decision. But switching partners, discovering a latex sensitivity, or simply wanting sex to feel better are all reasons to reassess. A condom that fits well and suits the material preferences of both people involved is one that actually gets used every time — which is the whole point. The anal douche section covers the rest of prep if anal sex is part of the picture.

Condoms vs other barrier options

Standard condoms protect against STIs and pregnancy during penetrative sex. Oral dams cover the same function for oral sex on a vulva or anus — same principle, different form. For those buying regularly, bulk packs bring the per-unit cost down significantly. A lube dispenser alongside makes a practical nightstand setup for consistent use.

Trusted brands, plain packaging

FAQs

Water-based and silicone-based lubes are both safe with latex and polyisoprene condoms. Oil-based products — coconut oil, body lotion, petroleum jelly — degrade latex and increase the chance of splitting. Stick to water-based or silicone-based to be safe with any condom type.

Polyisoprene condoms are softer and more pliable than latex. They conduct body heat better, so they warm up faster and feel closer to skin temperature almost immediately. People who try them often switch permanently — it's not just for those with a latex allergy.

Measure your erect girth in millimetres and divide by two — that's your nominal width starting point. Standard sits at 52–54mm. Under 52mm is snug; 55mm and above moves into large and XL. Girth matters far more than length — most condoms are long enough for most people.

Most flavoured condoms are fully rated for penetrative sex, but some are listed for oral use only. Don't assume either way — check the product description, which will confirm.

Most latex and polyisoprene condoms have a shelf life of three to five years from manufacture. The expiry date is printed on every individual foil. Storing them somewhere cool and dry — not a wallet or a car glove box — keeps them in good condition until the date on the pack.
