Choosing the right cut
High waist vs low rise
High-waist briefs create a longer line from waist to hip and suit a wider range of body types than low-rise cuts — the extra coverage at the stomach changes the silhouette significantly. Paired with a matching bra, the look reads as a deliberate set. Paired with a babydoll or chemise, a high-waist brief adds a layer of coverage underneath without interrupting the overall look.
Low-rise sits at or below the hip bone. It works under almost anything and pairs naturally with low-rise clothing. On some body types it rolls down — worth bearing in mind if that's been an issue before.
Crotchless
Crotchless briefs look identical to standard briefs from the front — the open gusset isn't visible when the piece is on. Some styles keep the opening plain and minimal; others frame it with pearl chains, lace edging, or decorative hardware that becomes part of the look when the piece comes off. The brief silhouette at the front is the same regardless of what's happening at the gusset.
Open back
Open back briefs have a full front panel with straps, cutouts, or lacing replacing the standard back. Less well known than crotchless styles, but the effect is distinct — the front reads as fully covered while the rear is exposed. These work particularly well under a babydoll with an open or sheer back, where the brief detail shows through the fabric.
Matching vs mixing
Buying a brief from the same set as a bra gives the most cohesive look. Buying separately is fine — but fabric matters more than colour. A satin brief under a lace bra reads as mismatched regardless of shade. Stick to the same fabric family and the look holds together without an exact match.
Neutrals — black, ivory, or nude — in quality lace pair across the most sets. A well-chosen neutral brief gets worn far more than an exact match that only works with one piece. For bra sets that don't include a brief, this range fills that gap. For legwear to complete the look, stockings and hosiery sit naturally alongside.
For a bolder direction with structured detailing and hardware, fetish hosiery and underwear takes underwear into different territory entirely.
Care
Hand wash in cool water with gentle detergent. Machine washing — even on a delicate cycle — pulls at the lace and degrades the elastic over time. Press excess water out gently and dry flat. Store away from anything with Velcro or rough textures that can snag the fabric.
