Choosing your first urethral sound

Size and material

Size is the first call, and slimmer is the rule to start. A narrow sound is far easier to insert, and the urethra stretches a little over time, so there's room to step up once it feels comfortable. Going straight for a thick one is the quickest way to put yourself off — or cause harm.

Material changes how it goes in. Firm metal holds its shape, glides precisely, carries the current strongly, and can be warmed or cooled beforehand for an extra edge. Flexible silicone bends with the natural curve of the body, which makes the first few attempts gentler and more forgiving.
